Shawn Chiambah, PhD, RPh, is a pharmacist whose twenty-year career has unfolded across three continents, through three distinct lives within a single profession: bench scientist, practicing pharmacist, and clinical researcher on international trials in some of the most consequential diseases of our time. He trained in West Africa and Europe and built his practice across Cameroon, England, and the United States, where he has now practiced for fifteen years. He writes from a rare vantage point, that of someone who has stood in all three rooms and heard the same patient questions echo through every one of them.

Experience Across Every Corner of Healthcare
Shawn writes for the patient who has been handed a prescription and asked to take it on faith. His work in patient education is grounded in two decades of practice — translating complex pharmacology into prose that patients can act on. His commitment to evidence-based medicine is not academic posturing — it is the discipline of a clinician who has seen what happens when evidence is withheld, simplified, or buried in jargon. He believes long-term health literacy is the single most undervalued intervention in modern care. A patient who understands their medicine takes it better, questions it wisely, and lives with it longer. At its core, his writing is about making medicine understandable — not by dumbing it down, but by respecting the reader enough to explain it well.
That gap has rarely been wider than it is now. Semaglutide. Tirzepatide. Retatrutide on the horizon. Compounded shots from clinics most patients have never heard of. Oral formulations entering the conversation. Insurance denials, manufacturer shortages, dosing errors, muscle loss no one warned anyone about, regain no one was prepared for, and price tags that quietly bend household budgets out of shape. He has counseled patients through every one of these moments, and watched the same class of drugs produce profoundly different outcomes depending on who guided the patient through it.
His training spans three countries and two continents. He earned a Bachelor of Pharmacy from Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria, then returned to his native Cameroon to begin practicing. He went on to earn an MSc in Medical and Pharmaceutical Research from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium, and a PhD in Molecular Medical Microbiology from the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom, where he also practiced pharmacy before moving to the United States. He is a Maryland-licensed registered pharmacist and an active member of the Society of Clinical Research Associates (SOCRA), the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), and the Maryland Society of Health-System Pharmacists (MSHP). His peer-reviewed work has appeared in leading medical journals, spanning multi-site international clinical trials in HIV, hepatitis B, tuberculosis, and emerging infectious diseases.
The Mission Behind Beyond the Shot
That conviction is the spine of The Sovereign Patient Series, and the reason for Beyond the Shot. The book moves, as the series does, between what the body actually needs and what medicine can and cannot offer, but here the lens narrows to the most consequential class of weight-loss drugs in modern outpatient care: how GLP-1 and dual- and triple-agonist therapies actually work, what the next generation of these medicines is likely to bring, how to protect muscle and metabolism while using them, and how to navigate the economics, the cash prices, the coupons, the compounding pharmacies, the insurance maze, without spending money the patient was never meant to spend. It is the conversation Dr. Chiambah has been having one prescription at a time, behind the counter and inside the clinic. It is the one he has finally sat down to write.
He writes for the reader who has just been handed a prescription pen, the slim auto-injector these medicines come in, or is thinking about asking for one, and wants to understand the medicine before the medicine understands them. For the patient whose first month went beautifully and whose third month did not. For the adult child watching a parent begin a GLP-1 in their seventies and wondering, quietly, whether anyone has thought about the muscle. For the clinician who has read the trial data but has not yet found the words for it at the bedside. For the woman who has decided, at last, that her own metabolism is worth thinking about with care. His is the voice of the pharmacist who has stood at the counter long enough to see exactly where these prescriptions break on contact with real life, and who has, at last, written it down for the readers those observations were always meant to serve.
He lives in Maryland, where he continues to practice, conduct clinical research, and write. Beyond the Shot is his answer to a question he has been asked, in some form, nearly every working week since the first GLP-1 prescription crossed his counter:

A Pharmacist’s Field Guide to GLP-1s, the Next Generation of Weight-Loss Medicine, and How to Protect Your Muscle, Your Metabolism, and Your Money
GLP-1–based medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro have transformed weight loss, but the shot alone is only half the story.
